Professor Gerd Binnig was awarded the prize for his remarkable work in the field of Physics, in which he contributed to the development of a sophisticated device that studies the surface of elements through his research on the scanning tunneling microscope. He presented an unprecedented method in building a tube through space, between a sharp pointed head and an atom absorbed by a crystal service, which led to the knowledge of the atom’s dimensions.
