King Faisal Prize in Medicine 2013 Laureate

Topic: "The Genetics of Obesity "

Leptin is not just an energy storage site but also an essential endocrine organ

Nationality: United States of America
Born: 6/10/1931, Stratford, Ontario, Dominion of Canada
Professor Douglas Coleman was awarded the prize for his pioneering research on obesity syndrome – diabetes mellitus, his discovery of the db gene – one of the two genes for appetite-regulating activities – and conducting a series of innovative experiments that revealed the presence of a strong factor in the blood that controls appetite, body weight, and the amount of energy. His research showed that the ability to produce this factor, while producing it in a large amount, leads to an excessive decrease in blood sugar. It turns out that this is the same factor as the leptin hormone that Friedman later discovered. The studies conducted by these two scientists are considered among the greatest achievements in life science in recent decades.
