Professor Jeffrey Friedman was awarded the prize for his research’s authenticity and usefulness on the international level. It focused mainly on the neural processes that regulate appetite and the amount of food and energy the body needs; he was able to detect the leptin hormone, which sends signals to the brain that reduce appetite. This discovery is considered the most important in the field of obesity research over the past three decades, and it is an exemplary example of convergence and interaction between many disciplines in the field of genetics, biochemistry, and cell science research.
