Professor Robert Williamson was awarded the prize for discovering the missing gene that causes thalassemia type A. This paved the way for gene therapy for several diseases, including hereditary hemochromatosis, sexually related diseases, hyperlipidemia, cystic fibrosis, and Alzheimer’s disease. His studies helped to reach a better understanding of the genetic components and diagnose genetic diseases in the fetus. Through the network of the World Health Organization, he was able to spread these services, where the health survey became a reality, especially for cystic fibrosis disease.
