Professor Tadamitsu Kishimoto was awarded the prize for his pioneering role in the discovery and development of a new and effective biological treatment for autoimmune diseases. His over thirty years work enabled him to discover the regulator of inflammation and immunity, interleukin 6, its receptors and pathways. It also determined the physiological function of interleukin 6, its role in autoimmune inflammatory diseases, its development of interleukin 6 receptor antibodies, and its use as a biological therapy. The first licensed clinical uses were made in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
