Professor Gian Bottazzo was awarded the prize for his work in the field of diabetes and its development, the phenomenon of antibodies to organ cells, especially pancreatic cells, and its relationship to diabetes, which was universally accepted by many researchers and had a significant impact on a broader understanding of diabetes, and its study of the phenomenon of antibodies to pancreatic cells in large numbers of diabetics and non-diabetics, which established firm precautions for preventing diabetes. In 1975, he discovered a special type of antibody named HLA-DR that specifically affects endocrine cells and these antibodies may be the main cause of the autoimmune phenomenon.
