Professor Janet D. Rowley was awarded the prize for her impeccable studies of the use of modern technical methods to study the abnormal molecules in the chromosomes of blood cells in people with leukemia. She discovered changes in the chromosomes of a type of acute leukemia that results from the use of drugs in the treatment of other cancers, which helped in diagnosing this type of cancer and its treatment of blood, and its description of the abnormal changes that occur in genetic molecules with pigments that result in cancerous changes in blood cells, which will help to find a cure for such diseases, as well as its role as a pioneer in the study of genetic factors in leukemia cells. She also discovered the origin of the Philadelphia chromosome in chronic adult leukemia and some cases of acute leukemia. She has more than 220 research papers in international scientific journals in this field over a period of 25 years.
