Professor John S. Fordtran was awarded the prize for his pioneering and successive contributions to the fight against diarrheal diseases over 20 years, which led to the discovery of the quantitative facts of the transport of fluids and salts across the intestinal mucosa and the clarification of how the transport process takes place. In light of these researches, he was able to classify diarrheal diseases according to their symptoms and causes, in the current method, and to lay the logical foundations for treating these diseases. His achievements were also a starting point for others to do more research in this field. His meticulous research and unique method for studying human intestinal functions have earned him a prestigious global position as a pioneer in this field. In addition to his participation in writing a book that is considered one of the most prominent international references in digestive diseases.
