Professor Mario Rizzetto was awarded the prize for his discovery, for the first time, of the delta antibody in the liver cells of patients with viral hepatitis. He showed that this antigen always accompanies the hepatitis B virus, and is accompanied by DNA inside the surface of the hepatitis B virus. Therefore, the delta generator is considered a new type of virus that has major implications for studies in the field of viral hepatitis and other viral diseases. He also discovered and identified the properties of the delta generator, and paved the way for the production of a vaccine against the dangerous viral hepatitis.
