1988 -Prof. Melvin F. Greeves-

Professor Melvin F. Greaves

King Faisal Prize in Medicine 1988 Laureate

Topic: "Leukemia "

We can look forward with optimism to the next decade during which a combined attack by molecular, immunological, epidemiological, and clinical techniques will enable us to control these once lethal forms of cancer

Nationality: United Kingdom
Born: 12/9/1941, Norwich, United Kingdom
Professor Melvyn Greaves was awarded the prize for his pioneering and distinguished work in studying the phenotype and identifying antibodies on the membrane surface of cancer cells. This work has contributed to the diagnosis of leukemia diseases and the development of their classification; he also contributed to evaluating the possible developments of the disease and treating those infected with it, and its use of modern biomolecular technology, which shed light on the potential origins of acute leukemia resulting from spontaneous changes in the stem cell that causes this cancer, and its effective contribution to the study of the relationship between retrovirus and leukemia in Europe and the Caribbean. It is the only type of leukemia that comes from any virus so far. Professor Greaves participated with researchers from several other countries in studying the epidemiological spread of leukemia worldwide. He spent more than 20 years in the field of leukemia research and others, during which he published more than 280 research papers in International scientific journals.
