Professor Roy Calne was awarded the prize for his highly influential research in the development of organ transplantation from the experimental stages in laboratory animals to routine clinical treatment for more than thirty years. In 1978, cyclosporine was used in organ transplantation, which resulted in a clear improvement in the results of those operations, and opened new horizons in organ transplantation medicine. He has pioneered the development of an innovative surgical method for liver transplantation, and has trained many transplant surgeons and researchers in this field worldwide.
