Professor William Greenough III

King Faisal Prize in Medicine 1984 Laureate

Topic: "Diarrheal Diseases "

What we have achieved so far was made possible largely through the long term support by Governments and Agencies for research on diarrheal diseases

Nationality: United States of America
Born: 3/1/1932, Providence, Rhode Island, United States of America
Professor William Greenough III was awarded the prize for his distinguished work in combating diarrheal diseases, represented by his contribution to the research that led to an understanding of the effect of toxins secreted by cholera bacteria and colon bacteria (causing diarrhea) on the cells of the intestinal mucosa, and his research that contributed to proving that cholera microbe toxins lead to the secretion of the enzyme adenosine monophosphate cyclic, which causes the loss of chloride ions through the mucous membrane of the small intestine. This discovery led to multiple attempts to find chemicals and drugs to counteract the effect of these toxins, as well as to more studies on the means and methods of intestinal secretions, and to clarify in previous studies the effectiveness of an antibiotic in shortening the period of infection with cholera, as well as his efforts in managing the International Center for Diarrhea Research in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
