King Faisal Prize in Service to Islam 2012 Laureate

We enjoy the bounty of security and faith, which enabled businessmen to establish vast projects that fulfill the needs of the poor and help transition them from the circle of poverty to that of self-sufficiency and productivity

Nationality: Saudi Arabia
Born: November 30, 1928, Al-Bukairyiah, Al-Qassim, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Shaikh Sulaiman Abdulaziz Al-Rajhi was awarded the prize for endowing more than 50% of his wealth for charitable works, and establishing for this purpose an institution concerned with following up the endowment, preserving it, and placing it in the banks that were specified for it. He established a significant Islamic banking facility, which is a model for Islamic banks seeking to abide by Islamic Sharia in their dealings. He continuously contributed to addressing the problem of poverty, and supported local and international associations with financial aid, training, rehabilitation, and in-kind giving. He cared for the Qur’an by supporting its memorization, printing, and distribution sessions, and cared for education by opening health colleges, the nucleus of a fully-fledged university, and an institute for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. He funded the construction of large mosques containing, in addition to performing prayers, places for Quran memorization academies and others for those in i’tikaf, some of which can accommodate thousands of worshipers; in addition, he adopted projects that contribute to achieving self-security for his country. He also keenly motivated the youth of his country and encouraged them to engage in self-employment, as well as his keenness and orientation to invest in Islamic countries.
