Professor Stephen Strittmatter was awarded the prize for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of the etiology of axonal growth failure and limited recovery after spinal cord injury. His scientific contribution had a significant impact on the potential for axonal growth recovery, identifying the role of the transcription repressor (Rho) protein in the Nogo protein pathway and its receptor formation. Professor Streetmatter has translated these discoveries to develop new therapeutic approaches and to regenerate the central nervous system in adult mammals.
